Idea Napkin No. 2

1) Me. I am a dedicated, hardworking person, who for some reason has always loved to find the needs of others and satisfy them in the best way I possibly can. I've always been good at listening to what others have to say and loving offering advice and help, although it may not always work. I ultimately aspire to make others happy. I have never felt something so rewarding as seeing a smile on someone's face and knowing that I'm the person who put it there.

2) What am I offering to customers? I want to offer students a service that shows how many tables/which spots are taken up at the library so they know exactly where to go/where not to go. I know I've spent up to 45 minutes looking for a spot at Lib West and it is the most frustrating thing ever. I hope to create a system of checking in when one sits in a certain location, allowing all others to see that a specific spot is now taken.

3) Who am I offering it to? I plan on offering this to college students. Specifically starting at UF, in Lib West, and then eventually expanding it to all libraries that University's have. Personally, there have been numerous occasions where I don't even go to the library, simply because I do not want to waste my time trying to find a spot.

4) Why do they care? Students care because when finals week comes around and they are stressing out, wasting their time looking for a place to sit is going to be the last thing they want to do. It would be much more convenient to know how many places/which places are or are not available prior to deciding whether or not they would like to go to the library that night.

5) What are my core competencies? The one major difference that I see in myself is the fact that I love doing things specifically for others. Yes, this service would also benefit myself. However, I'd mainly be doing it to see the happiness and satisfaction in the faces of all of those who enjoy this service.

I believe that this is a good system and that many people would enjoy having it. In addition to this, I believe that it would encourage more people to go to the library, as most students are discouraged to go solely for not knowing how much room is available. At the same time however, I do feel as though there could be some flaws in this system. The flaws being that some people simply would not care or forget to check in, making the number of tables incorrect and inaccurate.

I did not receive any feedback about discrepancies in my idea, other than the fact that most students would simply forget to check in, not necessarily on purpose. Although I'm supposed to list five, I can't really do that with one complaint. I feel like the only way to improve this is by having the check in the second you walk into the library, and that's when you choose your seat. However, that could be difficult if you're meeting up with people, expecting to someone to meet you, or run into a table that would like you to sit with them.

  1. Hello,

I think this idea would be awesome. I spend so much time at the library because of the amount of stuff I need to do. It is annoying to get here and find that almost everything is taken up. It would also be cool to know when most people are here in time frames so I know when to come and when not to.

  2. Since I’m not an on-campus student, I don’t really share the pain, but I could see that it would be annoying finding a place to study when all you want to do is study, not wander around. Maybe you could integrate something into the tables/chairs themselves (i.e. a sensor) that will tell the app that someone is sitting in that space? That way you could avoid having students that don’t check in, or move seats and forget to update the app. This could potentially be paid for by the school as well, so you wouldn’t need to come up with a cost to the student (unless maybe charging one time for the app download).
